MASTERPIECE IBC COMPETITION RULES

BALLET COMPETITION ELIGIBILITY AND AGE REQUIREMENTS 

Masterpiece International Ballet Competition is open to ballet dancers from all countries, ages 7 years old onwards (based on your age as of January 1st of the year of the competition).

Ballet and Contemporary Competition Age Categories

Pre Junior A:  7-8 years

Pre Junior B: 9-10 years

Junior A: 11-12 years

Junior B: 13-14 years

Senior A: 15-16 years

Senior B: 17 years and above

Professional dancers are not permitted to compete. A professional dancer is defined as anyone who is employed as a full-time dancer (Apprentices included) with a professional dance company. This includes dancers who are not currently employed under such a contract, but have been in the past.

Participants cannot perform the same variation twice.

Participants can compete in multiple entries in a higher age group.
E.g: Applying 1x Ballet solo (current age) + 1x Ballet solo (one age group higher than her current age as of January 1st of the year of the competition).

Registration

Masterpiece International Ballet Competition (MIBC) reserves the right to accept or reject any registration at its sole discretion.

Any application found to contain false, incomplete, or misleading information will result in immediate disqualification, without refund.

All requests for changes to registered information must be submitted no later than four (4) weeks prior to the competition start date.

An administrative fee of SGD 30 will apply to all approved changes. Please note that changes submitted after programme production deadlines may not be reflected in the official competition programme booklet.

Registration is only deemed confirmed upon full receipt of payment.

All registration fees and final payments are strictly non-refundable and non-transferable, under any circumstances.

Music Upload

1.Competitor must prepare his/her own-recorded music files for the competition.
2. Competitors will receive the Dropbox link to Upload your music prior to the Competition.
3. The music for the competition must be recorded separately with the title as WAV or MP3 file. So, each file should contain only music. 
4. The participant is responsible for the sound quality of his/her own music file. MIBC is NOT responsible for the quality of music.
5. Each title of music file should contain the name of the participant, the title of the music.
6. A competitor should bring, in case, additional music file or for his/her during competition.



COMPETITION CATEGORIES – BALLET SOLOS

All Ballet Solo competitors must perform one classical variation selected from the Official MIBC Repertoire List.
Maximum performance duration for all ballet solos is 2 minutes 30 seconds.

Pre Junior A (7–8 years)

Performance
One classical variation from the official repertoire list.
Participants may make slight modifications to the original choreography to suit their technical ability.

Footwear
Soft ballet shoes are mandatory.
Pointe shoes are not permitted.

Pre Junior B (9–10 years)

Performance
One classical variation from the official repertoire list.
Participants may make slight modifications to the original choreography to suit their technical ability.

Footwear
Soft ballet shoes are mandatory.
Pointe shoes are not permitted.

Junior A (11–12 years)

Performance
One classical variation from the official repertoire list.
Participants may make slight modifications to the original choreography to suit their technical ability.

Footwear
Soft ballet shoes are mandatory.
Pointe shoes are not permitted.

Junior B (13–14 years)

Performance
One classical variation from the official repertoire list.

Footwear
Female participants may choose to wear soft ballet shoes or pointe shoes.

Senior A (15–16 years)

Performance
One classical variation from the official repertoire list.

Footwear
Pointe shoes are compulsory for all female participants.

Senior B (17 years & above)

Performance
One classical variation from the official repertoire list.

Footwear
Pointe shoes are compulsory for all female participants.



COMPETITION CATEGORIES – CONTEMPORARY SOLOS

All Contemporary Solo competitors must perform one contemporary solo of free choice/choreography.
Maximum performance duration is 3 minutes.

This category is open to the following age divisions:

  • Pre Junior A (7–8 years)
  • Pre Junior B (9–10 years)
  • Junior A (11–12 years)
  • Junior B (13–14 years)
  • Senior A (15–16 years)
  • Senior B (17 years & above)

Footwear
Competitors may perform wearing:

  • Foot thongs
  • Half soles
  • Ballet shoes
  • Barefoot



COMPETITION CATEGORIES – DUO / TRIO

Duo/Trio performances must consist of a minimum of 2 dancers for Duo’s and a maximum of 3 dancers for Trio’s.
The group’s age category is determined by the oldest dancer in the group.
Maximum performance duration is 3 minutes.

Junior Group A (7–9 years)

Age Requirement
Oldest group member must be 9 years or under.

Footwear
Ballet: Soft ballet shoes only (pointe shoes not permitted)
Any Other Style: No Restrictions.

Junior Group B (10–12 years)

Age Requirement
Oldest group member must be 12 years or under.

Footwear
Ballet: Soft ballet shoes only (pointe shoes not permitted)
Any Other Style: No Restrictions.

Senior Group A (13–15 years)

Age Requirement
Oldest group member must be 15 years or under.

Footwear
Ballet: Soft ballet shoes or pointe shoes (optional)
Any Other Style: No Restrictions.

Senior Group B (16 years & above)

Age Requirement
All group members must be 16 years and above.

Footwear
Ballet: Pointe shoes only (Soft ballet shoes not permitted)
Any Other Style: No Restrictions.



COMPETITION CATEGORIES – GROUPS
 

Group performances must consist of a minimum of 4 dancers and a maximum of 35 dancers.
The group’s age category is determined by the oldest dancer in the group.
Maximum performance duration is 5 minutes.

Junior Group A (7–9 years)

Age Requirement
Oldest group member must be 9 years or under.

Footwear
Ballet: Soft ballet shoes only (pointe shoes not permitted)
Contemporary: Half-soles, foot thongs, or barefoot

Junior Group B (10–12 years)

Age Requirement
Oldest group member must be 12 years or under.

Footwear
Ballet: Soft ballet shoes only (pointe shoes not permitted)
Contemporary: Half-soles, foot thongs, or barefoot

Senior Group A (13–15 years)

Age Requirement
Oldest group member must be 15 years or under.

Ballet: Soft ballet shoes or pointe shoes (optional)
Contemporary: Half-soles, foot thongs, or barefoot

Senior Group B (16 years & above)

Age Requirement
All group members must be 16 years and above.

Footwear
Ballet: Soft ballet shoes or pointe shoes (optional)

COMPETITION JUDGING AND AWARDS

The MIBC judging panel will judge all the Candidates in Semi Final and Final rounds.  Decisions of the jury will be final and without appeal. Results will be announced on the Final Day.

Scholarships
Masterpiece IBC’s Scholarship winners will be announced on the Final Day.
Scholarships are awarded at the discretion of the judges and scholarship providers based on performances during the competition.



BALLET COMPETITION RULES

Competitors

  1. Cut off age will be by January 1st of the year of the competition. Proof of Age is required with a copy of the Childs Birth Certificate.
  2. The order of appearance on live stream will be determined by age. Competitors must accept and follow the order. Under NO circumstances will this order change
  3. Competitors must wear their own costumes and make-up. Suitble for the Variation and Free Choice chosen. Elaborate costuming will not add and extra value or points to the competitors scores.
  4. All competition performances are open to the public.
 

Music and Choreography Copyrights

  1. Competitors must furnish their own musical material with theatrical acoustic standards.
  2. Competitors must deal with royalty issues for their music and choreography. MIBC will not be responsible for any royalty disputes over music or choreography. Competitors must compensate for the damages to MIBC caused by royalty issues, if there are any.
  3. Competitors’ names, program titles, lengths of the pieces and playing orders must be noted in English on the label of the music material.
  4. All music must be age appropriate and free of any apparent profanity or vulgar language. Disqualification may occur if it is deemed the music is of this nature.

Media and Recordings

MIBC owns exclusive rights to the competition and related activities, including press interviews, all audio and video recordings during the competition, master classes, rehearsals, backstage, lobby, live broadcasting, reporting, photographs, production and distribution of presswork and audio-visual products created during the competition, opening ceremony and galas. Participants and their parents and/or legal guardians give their express permission for MIBC to make any photo/video recordings at any time. By participating in MIBC, participants and their parents or legal guardians give MIBC their express permission to use any such photo/video recordings including those containing their name for promotional purposes (including any uses in print, video, online, or in social media).

  1. Without the written approval of MIBC, none of the above shall be conducted by any person.
  2. MIBC and any third party authorized by MIBC are entitled to arrange for competitors to attend activities like photo sessions, interviews, broadcasting, audio and video recordings.
  3. Competitors release to MIBC and any third party authorized by MIBC the following rights during the competition and activities described in (2) as above:
    A. Live broadcasting and public transmitting
    B. Audio and video recording
    C. Reproduction and distribution of audio-visual products
    D. Transmitting through internet
    E. MIBC warrants that no competitors’ images will be distorted or misused.
  4. Competitors and their parents/guardians consent to MIBC and any third party authorized by MIBC in using their name, portrait, photos, voices and resumes in the following conditions and on the following products:
    A. During introduction, presentation and promotion of the competition and related activities.
    B. During production, recording, publishing, promotion and distribution of presswork and audiovisual products of the competition and related activities.
  5. All the above rights mentioned in (3) and (4), which competitors and their parents/guardians release to MIBC free of any charge, are permanent and cannot be changed or limited by location and time.
  6. In the case that competitors use music, choreography, and stage design copyrighted by any third, or provide photos and resumes to MIBC which belong to any third party, competitors must obtain a thorough and complete written authorization from the royalty owner, and provide it to MIBC. Competitors warrant that such authorization will not only grant them the right to use these works during their competition, but also ensure no rights granted to MIBC or any third party authorized by MIBC in (3) and (4) are in violations of rights against the royalty owner. Otherwise, competitors must compensate MIBC for any damage caused by compromising their warrants.
  7. During the competition, competitors must not accept any interview about the competition by any news agency, organization or individual not authorized by MIBC, or release to any third party any information about the competition not publicly announced by MIBC. MIBC reserves the right to disqualify competitors who violate this rule.
     

 Insurance and Security

  1. MIBC does not take responsibility for any previous injuries, chronic health conditions or stolen properties. Competitors must purchase their own insurances for accidents, disease and personal property.
  2. No one is allowed to take photos or make video recordings during the live stream unless authorized by MIBC.
 

 Resolution

  1. Only MIBC and jury have rights to make modifications to competition rules.
  2. Decisions of the jury will be final and without appeal.
 

 Notes

  1. All competitors must agree and follow all contents of this regulation when they sign up for Masterpiece International Ballet Competition.
  2. Resolution to any arguments should be based on this regulation, MIBC holds the right of final interpretation of this regulation.
 

IMPORTANT COMPETITOR NOTES

BALLET COMPETITION REGULATIONS

Repertoire List:

The competitor’s performance consists of Classical Ballet Solos (selected from the MIBC Repertoire List), and Contemporary pieces (free choice) . Contemporary refers to Neoclassical, Modern and/or Lyrical styles. Failure to do so will result in a scoring penalty OR disqualification from the competition; depending upon the decision of the MIBC Judging Panel.

Judging:

Competitors will be judged by a five member, international jury panel elected by the MIBC Organizing Committee. Competitors will be judged twice by each jury member – 1st score for technical merit and 2nd for the artistic interpretation. The lowest and the highest scores of both technical merit and artistic interpretation will be dropped and the remaining three scores will be averaged.

Time Limit:

A competitor who surpasses the required time limit will receive a scoring penalty OR disqualification from the competition; depending upon the decision of the MIBC Judging Panel.

All Ballet Solos: Time limit must not exceed of 2:30 minutes
All Contemporary Solos: Time limit must not exceed of 3 minutes
All Duo/Trio: Time limit must not exceed of 3 minutes
All Group: Time limit must not exceed of 5 minutes

Publicity & Participation:

Accepted competitors must ensure that they have the choreography and music rights to perform the contemporary pieces. Performers featured in any events will be selected by the Jury panel. Any competitor may be selected to perform, regardless of scores.

There are no refunds for Entry fees.
